Understand the Basics

What “Visa Validity” Means
and How to Avoid Costly Mistakes

“Visa validity” is often misunderstood. Many travellers confuse validity dates with length of stay or entry type. This page explains the key terms so you can plan travel correctly.

Valid-from / Valid-until
Single vs Multiple entry
Duration of stay

Visa validity explained with travel planning guidance

Key Terms You Must Know

Most eVisas (and many visas generally) include several different “time” concepts. These are not the same:

1) Visa Validity Period (Valid-from → Valid-until)

This is the time window when the visa can be used. You must enter (or start travel) within the validity period.

  • Valid-from: earliest date the visa can be used.
  • Valid-until: last date the visa is valid.

2) Duration of Stay (How long you can stay)

This is the maximum length of time you are allowed to remain in the destination per entry, or in total, depending on visa rules.

Example: A visa might be valid for 90 days but only allow 30 days stay per entry — it depends on the destination’s rules.

3) Entry Type (Single Entry vs Multiple Entry)

This controls how many times you can enter during the validity period:

  • Single entry: once you exit, you usually can’t re-enter using the same visa.
  • Multiple entry: you may enter/exit multiple times during the validity period (subject to stay rules).

4) Port of Entry / Conditions (if applicable)

Some visas restrict the entry point, travel dates, or require specific details to match your passport and itinerary. Always ensure your passport number, name spelling, and intended entry date are correct before submission.

Common Validity Mistakes

Booking travel after the “valid-until” date.
Confusing validity period with “days allowed to stay”.
Choosing single entry when multiple entries are needed.
Submitting with mismatched passport details or travel date.

If you’re unsure which option fits your itinerary, contact us before submitting.

Quick Examples

Simple Scenarios to Check Your Understanding

Use these examples as a mental checklist. Exact rules vary by destination — we’ll confirm for your chosen country during the process.

Scenario A

Your visa is valid from 01 May to 30 Jun. If you arrive on 01 Jul, your visa is no longer valid — even if you “only need 7 days”.

Scenario B

You need to enter twice (side trip to another country). A single-entry visa is risky. You may need multiple-entry (if available) or a new visa for re-entry.

Scenario C

Your visa is valid for 90 days, but your stay is limited to 30 days. You must exit or comply with rules after 30 days, even though validity still shows 90 days.
